THE FARRAN MACKENZIE HISTORY/MYSTERY BUS TOURS 2010: THE FINAL SEASON Maggie Wheeler, author of the acclaimed Farran Mackenzie Lost Villages mystery series, and Mary Lynn Alguire (creator of the fabulous Lost Villages Bus Tour) will partner for a third and final season to offer this special tour along the St. Lawrence from the historic Maple Grove Cemetery at the eastern edge of Cornwall to the International Seaway Lock in Iroquois. Rewritten to encompass the new fourth novel On a Darkling Plain, the tour will once again be stopping at various locations showcased in the full series, including A Violent End, The Brother of Sleep and All Mortall Things. Passengers will be entertained with historical background, novel bits and bites, author insights, and personal anecdotes of memorable moments from the last 10 years with Farran Mackenzie. The famous Nightingale House B&B in Ingleside (Sterling House in All Mortall Things) will be the location for our midday pause for a light lunch in the garden (weather permitting) hosted by owner Lesley O’Gorman, the good-sported model for the character of Mildred Keeps. During the lunch, tours of Sterling House will be given in small groups, and Maggie will give a reading from On a Darkling Plain. Dates for the 2010 season are: Saturday, July 17 Saturday, August 14 Saturday, September 11 This special tour will depart from the Ingleside mall parking lot at 10:00 a.m. with a return time of 4:00 p.m. (times approximate). Seating is limited to 44 per tour so advance purchase of tickets is required. Price is $58.00 per seat, all inclusive. You may order tickets via Mary Lynn by phone at 613-938-2848 or through the web site at maggie@maggiewheeler.com. FOR READERS AND FRIENDS—OR BOTH! SPRING 2010 I have been writing this newsletter for over six years now, I think, and remembering this has been a reminder of how quickly time passes—as is this early and delicious spring we are being treated to. As a Canadian, I never imagined I would be feeling that I really never got my winter before spring came but here we are. Thank goodness for the Winter Olympics! That will be my winter experience for 2010, and it was quite the spectacle, wasn’t it? Another spring means the work continues at Misselthwaite Cottage. This will be the last year for major work and I’m glad to see the end in sight. The back yard will be landscaped into a lawn at last, new trim colour added (cranberry to a black and white house—sexy!!) and new shutters up (also cranberry) to replace the old black ones I took down two years ago. The kitchen and dining room renovation will wait until the fall, and that will be another story. Last November, the final novel in the Farran Mackenzie series—On a Darkling Plain—was successfully launched. It was a great moment, and a sad one for me as well. It is time to finish Farran’s story and say good bye, but it feels very odd not to have something cooking on my desk about her and the Lost Villages. I am doing some public appearances this season, but the writing space on my desk is empty after ten years. It won’t stay that way, although I will take about a year’s break and see what comes up to be the next project. We are having a third and final season for the Farran Mackenzie History/Mystery Bus Tours . These tours have been a lot of fun for the travellers and the guides over the last two summers. We’ve sold out every tour and managed to get away with great weather every time. Hope that luck with the sunshine lasts this summer as we are doing three tours: July 17, August 14, and September 11. The schedule and route have been rewritten to include Iroquois for On a Darkling Plain and we now do a six-hour tour including a light lunch at the Nightingale B&B (Sterling House from All Mortall Things). I will include the details below and they will also be posted shortly on the web site. For Christmas last year, we created gift certificates for the bus tours and they were well received. If you have someone on your list for a birthday, Easter, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day who seems to have everything, maybe a trip into the past is in order! Just drop us a line via the web site and we can send one to you or directly to your recipient with your name as giver. Hope this finds you all well, and once again please see this newsletter as an invitation to send me your own latest news. As we all head out to our gardens, let’s allow the spirit of renewal to fill us with new enthusiasm again. And if anyone finds a body when you’re digging, let me know! Maggie Wheeler
