Background / Description

Waddington, New York has one of the few Main Streets in St. Lawrence County that continues to maintain its original architecture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Even though some of our downtown buildings are in a serious state of disrepair, Main Street has a distinct charm and quaintness that is not found elsewhere in St. Lawrence County. In the latter half of the 19th century, Waddington boasted numerous mills and factories and was considered the industrial hub of the river communities. Since the completion of the St. Lawrence Seaway, Waddington has suffered tremendously both economically and aesthetically, which has left our Main Street vacant and blighted.

The revitalization of our downtown corridor is the first essential step of capitalizing on the recreational opportunities the St. Lawrence River provides. The former St. Lawrence Hotel building serves as the structural anchor, and potentially the social anchor, of Main Street. The Hotel is not only the largest structure on Main Street, but also has significant historical value in our community. The loss of this building would have a serious impact on our Main Street revitalization efforts.
