With a husband whose professional career was in shipbuilding, this project has a special interest for this chairman. The Spirit of Enterprize is a replica of the original Enterprize and the first vessel of the name built by the United States Navy. Her history is a rich one, having seen action and defended our nation in multiple conflicts including the War of 1812. The Enterprize was commissioned by President George Washington in 1792. The topsail schooner was 140 feet long and weighed 160 tons. A recent telephone conversation with Kevin J. Traver, Executive Director of the National Maritime Heritage Foundation, brought this chairman a progress report. A tough economy has hit the project and slowed down progress, but it is the goal of the Foundation to have the vessel completed by 2012 and to have it home ported by the Maritime Museum of America in Washington, DC. The Initial plans for the vessel have been approved by the US Navy. The next phase in the project is raising funds to support the production of detailed construction plans for the vessel. The total goal for the project is $150,000.00.
